Bladder Cancer

Bladder cancer is the 6th most common cancer in the United States, diagnosed in about 85,000 new people each year. The most common causes of bladder cancer are smoking cigarettes, and other chemical exposures. It is most often diagnosed after age 55.

Radiation oncologists use radiation therapy in a variety of ways to help patients with bladder cancer. Radiation works by damaging the ability of cancer cells to multiply. When the cancer cells die, the body naturally eliminates them. Healthy cells are also affected by radiation, but they are able to repair themselves in ways cancer cells cannot.
