Our History
Speed of Light – The ASTRO Foundation (formerly the Radiation Oncology Institute (ROI)) – a 501(c)(3) public charity that was established as the philanthropic foundation of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), accelerates research and education that improve outcomes for people receiving radiation therapy. Since 2006, ROI has served as a catalyst for innovative, practice-changing research that enhances quality, safety and equity in care across disease types.
Nearly two decades later, the Foundation and ASTRO are aligning more closely than ever to meet the evolving needs of the field, rapidly sharing new discoveries, expanding evidence-based knowledge and helping ensure that every patient has access to the highest quality radiation care.
Together, the Foundation and ASTRO have invested more than $12 million in research to address the critical challenges and advance patient care. These investments have led to over $90 million in follow-on funding demonstrating the impact and acceleration of much needed research.
