Writing successful grant proposals is a critical skill for building a career in research. Speed of Light – The ASTRO Foundation offers the annual Grant Writing Workshop to help early career researchers turn great ideas into funded projects.

During the workshop, researchers will learn skills and strategies needed to craft competitive proposals that secure funding. Established investigators address critical gaps in knowledge — such as developing strong specific aims, understanding review criteria and navigating the revision process, while offering insights from their own successful research pursuits. By improving confidence and competence in grant writing, the workshop helps increase funding success rates, foster innovation, and ultimately drive advancements in patient care and outcomes.

This workshop is targeted for radiation oncology researchers in a diverse range of scientific disciplines, including biology, physics, clinical translation and health services/outcomes.

Upon completion of the Grant Writing Workshop, attendees will be able to:
  1. Analyze strengths, weaknesses and pitfalls of specific aims for grant proposals.
  2. Discuss the key elements of a grant proposal.
  3. Explain the NIH grant review and revision process.
The next Grant Writing Workshop will be held in September at the 2026 ASTRO Annual Meeting in Boston. The workshop is included with registration for the Annual Meeting, which will open in May 2026.

Previous session available on-demand to 2025 ASTRO Annual Meeting attendees. (ASTRO login and meeting registration required).
