Safety, Efficacy and Mechanism of Pre-operative GRID in Extremity Sarcoma
We are researching a radiation therapy technique called GRID therapy for patients with sarcoma. In GRID therapy, patients receive a very high dose of radiation in small areas of their tumor while adjacent areas get a low dose in a grid-like pattern. Evidence suggests that areas of cancer treated with a low dose of radiation but are close to areas of high-dose radiation still respond very well. We are conducting a clinical trial to treat patients with sarcoma of the arms and legs with a single dose of GRID therapy prior to standard pre-operative radiotherapy and surgery to remove the tumor. We are investigating whether GRID is safe and effective and analyzing post-GRID biopsies to understand if it activates an immune response that increases tumor cell destruction. We hope this study can help patients with sarcoma while furthering knowledge of GRID and how it could be used for other cancers.
