What is a Donor Advised Fund (DAF)?

A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) is a simple, flexible way to manage your charitable giving. After setting up a DAF with a participating company, you make contributions to your DAF—often using cash, stock, or other assets—and receive an immediate tax deduction. From there, you can recommend grants to your favorite nonprofits, allowing you to give strategically, thoughtfully, and at your own pace. DAFs make philanthropy easy to plan, tax-efficient, and impactful—so your generosity can go further, when and where it matters most.

Making Giving Easy: Using the DAF Direct Widget

If you currently have a DAF through Fidelity Charitable, DAFgiving360 (available through Charles Schwab), or BNY Mellon Charitable, you can use the DAF Direct Widget to make a gift directly from your account. Select the company that hosts your DAF, designate Speed of Light (formerly known as Radiation Oncology Institute), and your desired gift amount, and the widget will direct you to your account to finalize your gift.

Making a Bigger Impact: Successor-In-Interest

You can create a lasting legacy by naming Speed of Light – The ASTRO Foundation – as a successor-in-interest to a portion of your Donor-Advised Fund. This thoughtful designation ensures that, after your lifetime, your charitable resources continue to support research, education and programming that advance radiation oncology and improve care for patients.

Designating Speed of Light – The ASTRO Foundation – as a successor-in-interest is similar to naming a beneficiary on a retirement account.
