Breast Cancer

If you find out you have breast cancer, you should discuss your treatment options with your physician. Breast cancer treatment will vary depending on the stage and location of the cancer and will be individually tailored to your specific needs.

Overview

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women, according to the American Cancer Society. This year, there will be an estimated 316,950 new cases of invasive breast cancer diagnosed in women and 2,800 cases in men, with an additional 59,080 cases of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) diagnosed in women. Approximately, 42,680 breast cancer deaths will occur in 2025. Breast cancer can often be cured, with about 80% of all patients with breast cancer living at least 10 years after their diagnosis.

Radiation therapy is combined with other treatments, including surgery and systemic therapy, to reduce the risk of the tumor coming back and improve the probability of surviving the cancer. Radiation therapy can also be used when the cancer has spread to other parts of the body and can provide symptom relief and local tumor control. Talk with your treating doctors to determine whether radiation should play a role in your care.
