Animated, Multilingual, ADA-accessible Videos for Patient Education
We are developing a five-part animated video series on radiation therapy for head and neck cancer to explain complex concepts in a clear, accessible way. Patients preparing for radiation treatment often experience anxiety because they do not know what to expect. In partnership with animators from the UCLA Animation Workshop, we are creating videos that will clearly and concisely illustrate treatment logistics, common side effects and management strategies that will be accessible to patients throughout their radiation treatment journey. To reach a wide audience of viewers, the videos are being translated into multiple languages and employ accessibility options for individuals with sensory, intellectual, learning and physical disabilities. The APERTURE (Animated Patient Education in Radiation Therapy to Understand Radiation Effects) clinical trial is being launched to assess the videos’ impact. We hope to expand the video library to other disease sites and make it a widely used tool in clinics nationwide.
